The New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are going to celebrate like it's 1999. Or perhaps in the middle of December of last year.
Because these teams will face off on the final stage, just like they did in the NBA Cup this season and in the 1999 Finals.
After sweeping back-to-back series and last dropping a game on April 23, the 'Bockers have been a talking point. However, oddsmakers now favor the Spurs since they have home-court advantage and a better record this season.
Keys for the Nicks:
The Knicks will use Jalen Brunson as their primary offensive conduit, but they will also need to get the most out of Karl-Anthony Towns.
This is due to two factors. First, the Spurs plan to give up on stopping Brunson, or at the very least, contain him as much as possible. They will attack him with a number of long, lanky, disruptive stoppers, and they will undoubtedly have assistants on standby in case he breaches the first line of defense.
Towns can help New York penalize San Antonio for focusing too much on Brunson. The Knicks truly need him to spread out the defense by shredding nets from distance, but they will rely on him for connective passing and ask him to punish smaller players when they are shifted onto him. Because the Spurs cannot afford to overlook him if he is a knockdown shooter in this series.
Although the Knicks have tried to establish him early, his offensive involvement may occasionally be perplexing. His most field goal attempts in each playoff round thus far have occurred in Game 1, where he is also averaging 4.7 three-point attempts. He should have no issue hitting at least three triples in this game if his three-ball is on, which it typically is.
Keys for the Spurs:
Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, San Antonio's draft selections, immediately appear to be huge successes. De'Aaron Fox's 2025 deadline deal was a strategic accelerator. With this squad, the Spurs have made many mistakes.
Nevertheless, Victor Wembanyama is the reason they are in this position. He may not be a one-man show, but he is currently the league's most formidable player and appears to be headed toward becoming one of its most influential players ever. He expands the options on both ends of the floor and modifies geometry.
The Spurs will give him every chance to lead because they are essentially designed to go as far as he can. They used to treat him like a child, but that is no longer the case. They used him more than ever in the Western Conference finals (18.4 shots and 37.7 minutes per game), and it seems like they will only get better if those figures don't change.
As a walking-mismatch scorer with unmatched reach and range on defense, he is their perpetual edge. San Antonio is 7-2 when he takes more than 15 shots this postseason and 4-4 when he doesn't, so good things nearly always happen when he looks his way. Don't be shocked if he surpasses 30 points, as he did in the series opening of rounds one and three, as the Spurs will likely force feed him early and frequently.
