NBA season 2020-2021
NBA Season Starts Dec 22nd

The 2020-2021 NBA season begins Dec 22nd, with the first game set for Brooklyn’s Barclay Center, where the Nets play host to the Golden State Warriors.  Unlike past seasons, where each team typically plays 82 games, this season each team is scheduled to play only 72 games.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the playoffs will begin May 22.  And while most teams will play to empty arenas, that may change as the season progresses.

Due to Covid-19 protocols, this season’s schedule incorporates steps to reduce travel. For instance, if a team is scheduled to play twice in one market, those games will be played consecutively. Each team will play an average of four games against the same opposing team:  two at home and two on the road. Additional steps include more instances of teams playing consecutive road games against teams geographically close, and roughly 50% fewer instances of teams making single-game road trips.

Safety protocols include daily testing of players and staff, with anyone testing positive, even if asymptomatic, being benched for ten days.  Also, an anonymous tip line has been instituted to report violations of safety protocols.
