Sportsbook Betting Surges In NFL Week 1

Over 100,000 new sportsbook accounts were registered on the league's opening Sunday, despite record trading volume in prediction markets.

Nearly 100 million geolocation checks were made throughout GeoComply's network on the first NFL Sunday of the 2026 season, demonstrating the league's capacity to draw sportsbook clients even as prediction markets increase the number of sports event contracts they provide.

In comparison to the 36.2 million geolocation checks made on August 30, the last Sunday before the NFL season started, GeoComply logged 99.8 million geolocation checks from U.S.-licensed sportsbook clients on Sunday, a roughly 176% increase.

The number of new sportsbook accounts opened rose even more dramatically. On Sunday, GeoComply registered almost 135,700 new accounts, an increase of over 310% from 33,000 two weeks prior.

When using a sportsbook, a single consumer may produce several checks. A consumer registered with numerous U.S. sports betting companies will appear more than once in the account data because GeoComply, a geolocation technology provider employed by major sportsbooks and gaming operators, counts accounts rather than individuals.

Nevertheless, the rises offer a preliminary measure of the NFL's capacity to draw in new players and entice current ones to return to regulated sportsbooks. Although the numbers cover separate betting windows, the 99.8 million checks also surpassed the 81.4 million made during Super Bowl LX in February.

In its announcement of the Week 1 numbers, the business stated, "Football doesn't just wake up the bettors already on a platform." "It attracts new players who wish to participate in the action."

Billions of dollars are traded in prediction markets.
A record-breaking weekend for prediction markets, which provided NFL event contracts to clients in a larger geographic area than state-regulated sportsbooks, coincided with the sportsbook boom.

On Sunday, seven of the ten operators that Aldrin Research tracks saw transactions totaling more over $510.9 million on NFL markets. With parlay-style combination transactions excluded, Kalshi accounted for $388.1 million of that trading volume, or around 76% of the total.

The entire trading volume across tracked prediction market platforms on Sunday was predicted to exceed $3 billion, including Polymarket activity and contracts related to other sports and topics.

Aldrin Research discovered that during the first NFL weekend, DraftKings Predictions, Crypto.com, Novig, and ProphetX also set or almost reached platform records.

The expansion shows how football is supporting both well-known sportsbooks and a new wave of federally authorized exchanges at the same time. Prediction markets, according to sportsbook executives, grow their clientele without substantially eating into the earnings of current sportsbook patrons.

Different regulatory frameworks govern the two product categories. Customers who live in states where sports betting is permitted are the only ones who can place bets at traditional sportsbooks. Sports event contracts, according to prediction market operators, are accessible in the majority of U.S. states and are governed by federal commodities law.

Another imprecise parallel to the handle of sportsbooks is trading volume. Measures between prediction market trade volume, sportsbook geolocation activity, and betting handle are hard to assess because state-level gaming authorities usually publish monthly betting figure reports.

Football, and the NFL in particular, is a major factor for both prediction markets and sportsbooks, as evidenced by recent sportsbook geolocation data and reports on prediction market trade activity.
